Navigating Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) restrictions in coatings

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) are widely used in coatings for their water, oil, and stain resistance, for non-stick surfaces, anti-corrosion properties, and fire retardancy. However, concerns over their environmental persistence and potential health risks have led to global regulatory PFAs restrictions, requiring the development of alternatives. PFAs regulations are tightening across regions, with bans and phase-outs targeting key PFAs compounds. As a result, the coatings industry transitions to PFAs-free coatings that maintain functional performance and regulations compliance with evolving legislation.

Regulatory restrictions

Globally, the Stockholm Convention has banned PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), and PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonate) due to their persistence and health risks. In Europe, a ban on ~10,000 PFAS is proposed, with PFHxA and others under discussion. In the Americas, the USA has phased out PFOA and PFOS, following an EPA roadmap, while Canada has set monitoring and water guidelines. In Asia-Pacific, China and Japan have banned PFOS and PFOA, and Australia is phasing out certain PFAS voluntarily.

Key applications and materials:

The increasing regulatory scrutiny on PFAs is driving the coatings industry to explore alternative solutions for:

  • Micronised waxes
  • Wetting agents
  • PVDF resins
