Ethyl mercaptan (ethanenthiol) is an organosulfur compound with a distinct odor. A colorless liquid, it's toxic in high concentrations and has a detection threshold for humans of 0.36 parts per billion. It is intentionally added to butane and propane to impart an easily noticeable smell to these normally odorless fuels that pose the threat of fire, explosion, and asphyxiation.
